What is Winter Pride?
A celebration of West Coast Florida's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities, Winter Pride Tampa Bay 2006 is truly a cooperative event. Winter Pride Tampa Bay 2006 will bring together an estimated 5,000 people, providing an excellent opportunity for business, organizations and entertainers to reach out and proudly support diversity.
Winter Pride Tampa Bay, Inc. is a Florida nonprofit corporation.
Federal 501 (c) (3) tax exempt status of the Internal Revenue
Code as a nonprofit corporation is pending.
How Many Pride Celebrations are there in the U.S.?
There are currently hundreds of Pride Celebrations, Festivals and Pride-related special events held in the U.S. Most notable are those drawing hundreds of thousands of people in major cities such as New York City, where the concept of an annual Pride Celebration was originated in 1970, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. In Florida, annual Pride Celebrations are hosted in Ft Lauderdale, Key West, Miami, Orlando, Pensacola, Sarasota, St Petersburg and Tallahassee.
Why is Winter Pride Tampa Bay held in February?
The founders of Winter Pride Tampa Bay felt that there was a need, given the local political climate, for increased visibility of the Tampa GLBT Community. What better way to be visible than a public GLBT Pride Celebration? With a very successful Pride Festival in St. Petersburg in the traditional Gay Pride Month of June, and the renowned Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in October, they felt the ideal time of year would be February -- four months before St. Pete Pride and four months after the Film Festival.
As a bonus, the relatively consistently beautiful weather in late February makes an outdoor Pride Celebration especially attractive to both locals and visitors.
Most Pride Celebrations are held in the month of June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of June 17, 1969 in New York City's Greenwich Village. This event marked the turning point for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality in the United States. Pride Celebrations in major cities and regionally often coordinate their events so as not to conflict with each other's dates.
Does being a Sponsor of Winter Pride Tampa Bay preclude my company or organization from sponsoring other regional Pride Celebrations?
Absolutely Not! In fact, multiple sponsorships of regional Pride Celebrations are encouraged. Of course, each Pride Celebration and event is a unique and distinct entity, and is responsible for setting their own schedule of events, sponsorship packages, fulfillment and maintaining their own financial solvency. If needed, representatives from Winter Pride Tampa Bay will be able to refer you to other Pride Celebration representatives throughout the area.
